French wine – history of the birth

It seems it always has been, but from the first French vines to leadership last century. Dozens of generations of winemakers, through trial and error have found the perfect variety suitable for the area and climate.

The beginning of the era of French wine is considered to be the 7th century BC when Greek invaders founded the city of Marseille. The regions that produce French wine.

The current winery France consists of 12 regions. Leaders are Bordeaux, Burgundy and champagne. These regions gave the world of Chablis, Beaujolais and the Medoc. The South West territory and Provence produce good wine with the best balance quality-price. Wine from Corsica, Savoie or Jura is almost impossible to enjoy outside of France. French law divides wine into four categories of quality:

  • The lower tier of “table wines”. Of course, not to say that these French wine – bad, but enjoy the unique taste, choosing such drinks, is unlikely.
  • Local (village) wine. The production must meet strict rules and standards. The main difference from the dinning room are required to check the quality.
  • The highest quality origin. It is a quality wine produced in a good, but not the most outstanding regions. There is no strict limitation on the varieties and volumes.
  • Vintage (A. O. S.). The production is under the control of the government. The best of wine country.

There are other classification: according to color (red, pink, white, and gray), the amount of sugar (dry, semi-dry, sweet) and aging (young, Mature).

The grape varieties.

It is no secret that the same grape variety grown on different lands/climates will give a different wine. And, despite the fact that in the world there are countless grape varieties in the French lands are cultivated only 136. White wines produced from Chardonnay, Folle Blanche, Sauvignon Blanc and Colombard. The basis for the Reds are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, kamerer.

A separate Chapter – sparkling wine. Harvest for them is hand-assembled, and the technology of production is carefully controlled by law. Even developed a special classification of sparkling wines.

One of the main requirements in obtaining standing of the drink is properly chosen combination of soil-climate-vine (“terroir”).
