In 2012, the California Wine Institute has published a study that revealed that the Vatican is the world leader in wine consumption per capita.<\/p>\n
74 litres of wine or about a hundred 0.75 litre bottles of wine per year per person \u2013 that set the bar to the residents of the Vatican. For this indicator, they twice exceeded the world-famous wine connoisseurs from France and Italy.<\/p>\n
Of course, the result could be affected by the fact that the wine in the Vatican is used for Church purposes, and the population of the state there are only some 800 inhabitants. But the specialists of the Institute of Wines believe that it is not only that. As an example, they cite similar statistics for other microstates: Andorra (46 litres\/person per year) and Luxembourg (56 l\/person per year ranked 2nd in the list). The numbers are not insignificant, but to the level of the Vatican are still not short. What’s the matter? <\/p>\n
Researchers have identified several factors: the residents of the Vatican in General, older (children do not affect the statistics), are dominated by male population with a high level of education, and the meal often takes place together.<\/p>\n
In addition, the researchers cited statistics 2011. In that year the population of the Vatican consumed “only” 62 liters of wine per year per person. 20% increase for 1 year – not bad.<\/p>\n
